La Rocca d'Anfo is a military fortification of considerable importance.
For the most part it is inside the mountain;
outside you only see:
♦ the weapon positions,
♦ the barracks of the 19th and 20th century,
♦ the observation posts and
♦ partially the pathways.
The first installations date back from 1300
built by the Visconti dynasty of Milan.
In the beginning of the year 1400
started the OCCUPATION and the STRUCTURAL developments
executed by the Venetians until the end of the 18th century,
followed by Napoleon Bonaparte and in 1900 by the Italians.
Why did so many people care about the position of the Rocca d'Anfo?
Because from the very beginning (1300) until the year 1919
a little further to the north,
there used to be the border with the Austrians: SÜDTIROL (South Tyrol).
In fact in the border village Lodrone you can still find today
the castle of the noble Lodron family
of whom descended a famous prince-bishop in Salzburg.
